The Black Belt Oath

I do solemnly swear that by receiving this rank of  Black belt that I will do my part
To lead by example in everything that I do.  
Including willingly accepting the responsibilities of assisting all lower belt students and treating
all persons as I would want to be treated;
To set a standard of loyalty and excellence that all belts should be proud to follow;
To always remain faithful and honest to my Sabum-nim and school;
To do nothing that would or could be considered dishonorable to my Sabum-nim or my fellow
students;
To train my body and my mind diligently in the teachings and examples set by my Sabum-nim
and the traditions of Taekwondo; From this day on I shall never leave my Sabum-nim, fellow
Black belts or lower belts to wonder what my position is regarding  upholding the traditions,
responsibilities and rules of Taekwondo.
I shall never disrespect my Sabum-nim by any unexcused or prolonged absence without first
telling him about such an absence.  
I will train consistently and diligently, striving to constantly improve my knowledge of Taekwondo.
I shall never insult or disrespect a fellow student by speaking ill of them in front of them or behind
their backs.
I understand that through my training I have obtained the physical skills which are considered
lethal.  I will never strike out in anger!
I will use my skills in such a way that will protect others and myself from harm.  Physical violence
will always be a last resort.
From this moment on LOYALTY, HONOR and INTEGRITY are of the utmost importance in all
that I do.
I will hold the teachings and training of Taekwondo in the highest regard and I will follow these
teachings for the rest of my life.
I understand that I now hold an almost unreachable position within my school, as well as my
community.
In the public eye, I shall do all that I can to insure that all are treated justly.
I will never turn my back on a fellow student or anyone in need.  I will correct, guide, lead and
assist anyone in everything that I can.  I will try to use the teachings of Taekwondo in all aspects
of my daily life.
I will put my priorities, activities, and functions in my life in the order of God - Country - Family,
Work/School and Taekwondo.
I will obey all laws of city, state and country and will consistently conduct myself with the highest
moral standards.
I understand that my Sabum-nim has given me the opportunity to wear the Black belt.  As I
accept his Black belt, I understand that I now represent my Sabum-nim.  If I violate or disrespect
this oath or any of its contents in any way, I will immediately and  willingly surrender my Black belt
and Kukkiwon certification to my Sabum-nim.  Furthermore, I understand that if I do not
surrender my Black belt and Kukkiwon certification, when required or demanded, then I know
that my Sabum-nim has the unilateral and sole right to decertify me as a Black belt.
As a Black belt, I accept all the responsibilities which the rank requires, including teaching and
participation in all activities of this school.  As I accept my Black belt, I am accepting the
responsibility of being a teacher, a leader and a role model.
I understand that others will judge me by my actions, so my intentions must be honest and pure.
If I can not or will not accept the above then I should not accept the rank of a Black belt.
